The first thing you should do to get your site design all set is work on the menu.

Your site menu is how people navigate from one place on your site to another. For most websites, it’s best to keep themenu simple and clean. People used to build giant menus with dozens of links that they would place in a sidebar.This makes sites look cluttered. Keep your primary menu simple and high level. This menu will go across the top ofyour site in most cases, but that will depend a bit on your theme.

Plan your site menusBefore you actually build your menu, get an idea of what items you want in your menu. Some common items are:

Home—this is just a link to the homepage. It’s not necessary since clicking on your logo will take people to yourhomepage and people are coming to expect that. If your menu is getting big, then eliminate the home link. You can keep a home link in a secondary menu, like the one you might put on the footer of your site.
Resource Page—you definitely want a link to your resource page on the main menu. I would link to it in a footermenu too if you’re going to use one. In fact, I would put everything from your main menu in your footer menu too,in addition to other items on this list. The footer menu will just look like a series of links in the footer.
About—This is a page your may or may not make that talks about you or your business. It’s the backgroundinformation that people may be interested in as they decide how much they want to trust your opinion. Again, thisis a good candidate for the footer menu only if you’re starting to get more than 5 or 6 items in the primary menu.
Contact Us—For many websites, there’s no reason to give readers any way to contact you. But in the case that you do want them to be able to reach you, a contact page with a form is a good way to do it. Just install a good forms plugin such as "Contact 7" or "WP Form" and create a form that they can fill out that automatically generates an email that will come to your inbox.This is another good one for the footer menu, unless contact is really important for your site. I'd rather spend my time writing a blog and reaching thousands verses and hour to respond to senseless questions.
Blog Post Categories—This one belongs in the primary menu in most cases. If the blog content is the primarycontent on your site, then I suggest you create a menu item for each blog category. If the whole blog is secondaryon your site, then maybe you just want to include a single menu item that takes people to the blog page. In thiscase, it might make sense to add your blog categories as sub-menu items under the blog.
YouTube—If you have a youtube channel, go ahead and add a link to that channel in the primary menu, footermenu, or both.
Terms and Conditions (and other legal pages)—If you make a page for these, go ahead and link to them from the footer menu. The same would go for a comment policy or any other policy pages on your site.
Product Page—If you have a product on your site, whether it’s a storefront or a single product or course, linking to more information and the sales page for your product(s) is a good thing to do on the primary menu.

Build your menuNow that you have some ideas of what to put in the menu, let’s talk about building it.1. On your WordPress Dashboard, go to “Appearance”→”Menus”2. Near the top there’s a box that says “Select a menu to edit”. You can pick one of the existing demo ones, or click“Create a New Menu”.3. Next to “Menu Name” pick a name. I like to keep it simple and name it something like “Primary Navigation” for themain menu and “Footer Menu” for the footer one.4. Now, on the left you’ll see where it says “Pages”, “Posts”, “Categories”, and various other things. Open up “Pages”and start there. Click the where it says “View All” and then check the box next to any of the pages that you want to add to this menu. Then click “Add to Menu”. Don’t worry about the order at this point. Just add them. You’ll see them get added to the “Menu Structure” on the right.5. Now click on “Categories” and add any blog categories you want to show up on your menu, even if you want them tobe sub-menu items that appear as drop downs under one of the other menu items (like Blog).6. If you want a link to YouTube or some other URL that’s not on your site, click on “Custom Links”. Add the URL for your YouTube channel where it says “URL” and then write something like “YouTube” where it says “Link Text”.7. Add any other items you want on the menu following the same steps above.8. Now that all menu items are added, you can click on any of them and drag them up and down until they’re in the order you want them to appear on the menu. For sub-menu items, place them beneath the menu items you want them to show up under and then drag them slightly to the right. They will appear indented on the menu structure and that’s how you know they’ll show up under the other menu item on your website.9. Under “Menu Settings” below the structure section, check the box next to “Primary Menu” now to make this menuappear as the primary menu on your site.10. Click “Save Menu”11. Follow the same steps to create your footer menu.

Let’s talk about widgetsWidgets are those things you see in the sidebar of most sites. You can get to the widgets section of your site byclicking on “Appearance”→”Widgets”. When you get there, you’ll see all the options you have available for widgets.Some themes and plugins add even more options.

You can use text widgets for things like the affiliate legal disclaimer. Just grab the type of widget you want and drag itover to the main sidebar, one of the header widget areas, or one of the footer widget areas. You can turn header andfooter widget areas on and off using the customizations available for your theme.

Add your LogoAt this point you probably have a logo ready to go. If you don’t, that’s okay, but when you get one add it.

To do this, start by saving a smaller version of your logo. Probably no more than about 50 pixels tall depending on how you do your header. Then, upload that image file to your media library. Now, use your theme to add the logo to your header. This is usually done under “Appearance”→”Customize”. If you can’t figure it out, don’t fret. Just google “How to add my logo on ___” and add the name of your theme. You’ll probably find a nice little video walking you through the exact steps to get your log on the header.

Customizing your SiteOur #1 tip for customizing your site is to keep any customizations you do outside the theme to a minimum. What we’re talking about here is CSS code. Don’t do any coding unless you know what it does. And even then, remember what you coded so that if you get a theme update later and the site starts looking all weird, you can go back to your CSS and fix it.

For most people, just leave the code alone and stick to theme.

This part of the process will depend entirely on what theme you chose for your site. I recommend that you go to thewebsite for your theme and watch their tutorials. Also check out YouTube and search for your theme on there. Thereare many great tutorials on various themes out there. And if you’re struggling to make your site look how you want it,feel free to post in the Facebook group for suggestions. Others out there may be using the same theme and might have great advice for you.

The types of customizations we normally make on our site are things like font sizes and colors, background colors,header colors, link colors, all pretty basic stuff. Some themes have sliders and neat things you can do with images,like the post carousel on X Theme.

Just remember our #2 tip for customizing your site. Keep it simple. Don’t try to add more bells and whistles than youneed. The most important thing on your site is the content, not the design. So if you’re having trouble making itperfect, then stop. Make it look good enough and then move on. You’ll get more comfortable with your theme andwith WordPress as you go along and then you can come back and tweak it if you want. But for now, get the menu howyou want it, get the overall theme looking good, and move on.
